PARAMARIBO - The Fire Department Suriname (KBS) has once again reported a wave of prank calls this summer vacation. Youths who are reportedly behind most of these prank calls make these fake alarms convincing by using a panicked voice when they say that a house is on fire.
Olton Pinas, the spokesman of the Fire Department Suriname, expressed his concern regarding the fact that there has been a drastic increase in the number of prank calls this year. The Fire Department Suriname usually receives these prank calls in the summer vacation when youths are evidently looking for ways to keep themselves busy. Although some of these youths might seem it fun to pas the time making these prank calls, the Fire Department Suriname made it clear that these prank calls could have serious consequences. These prank calls result in the unnecessary use of limited resources and also increase the chances of firefighters going to a non existing house fire when they are needed elsewhere where there is an actual house fire. In the dry season there are often fires at multiple locations. Each response requires fuel, vehicles and manpower. The Fire Department Suriname cannot afford to waste its resources in a time when these resources are extremely scarce. It there condemned the growing trend which is triggered by mischief. The Fire Department Suriname urges parents to explain to their children how such prank calls could have serious consequences but at the same time it also urged the lawmakers to make these prank calls a serious offence that is punishable by law.
