PARAMARIBO - The Energy Company Suriname (EBS) had repeatedly assured that the problems with the delivery and distribution of cooking gas cylinders would...

be a thing of the past but retailers recently complained that the problems are far from over. The retailers explained that the delivery of the popular cooking gas cylinders of 28 lbs is not going smoothly and that this situation is infuriating customers who do not want to return home empty-handed. They complained that there is not only much uncertainty regarding the availability of cooking gas cylinders but that there is also a lack of proper communications from the company that delivers these cylinders and that is also a subsidiary of the EBS namely Ogane. The only thing that has become a thing of the past is the predictabilty regarding the days when which full cylinders are delivered and the empty ones are collected by Ogane. The retailers can no longer put the minds of their customers of ease as they can no longer say with certainty when the fresh supply of cylinders will arrive. The frustration is therefore growing among the retailers and the customers. Even the retailers do not always have cooking gas at home despite the fact that they are the ones who sell this product. Especially the loyal customers often get infuriated when they are told times and time again that the full cooking gas cylinders are out of stock. The EBS previously announced that there is no shortage of cooking gas but of cylinders. Retailers responded by saying that the EBS should buy more gas cylinders in response to the growing demand. Ogane had previously announced that a shipment of gas cylinders would arrive in Suriname this month. Meanwhile cooking gas cylinders are popping up on the black market and a full cylinder that costs about SRD 480 is sold between SRD 4,000 and SRD 8,000 on social media. Some online retailers claim that they have dozens of cylinders in stock while Ogane is facing a huge shortage.
