The teachers and the students could not enter the lassrooms so it was decided that the schools would be closed. Reports indicate that snakes and rodents were spotted in the school yards. The coordinator of the Bureau for Primary Education Nickerie, Gokoel, explained that he would not be able to indicate when these schools would be open because “it is still raining.” The schools that were flooded are Sint Alfonsusschool, Sint Claraschool, Openbare School (OS) NieuwNickerie 1, 2, 3 and 4, OS Rambaran Mishre, OS Laigsingh and OS Skoertjieweg. Officials explained that clearing the ditches that are located in the vicinity of these schools would be an option to make sure that the water can enter the drainage system to go elsewhere.

Gokoel pointed out that he has already informed his superior of the situation and that “I am waiting for instructions.”
