PARAMARIBO – About 30 workers from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) have either been suspended or reassigned...

to another department because of an ongoing police investigation. Reports indicate that these workers are possibly involved in irregularities within the ministry. Social Affairs and Housing Minister Diana Pokie explained that several cases regarding irregularities have been reported to the police and that she decided to either suspend or reassign these workers. “I have suspended some of them. It depends on the severity of the case”, said minister Pokie who added that she took this measure to prevent any interference in the investigation. The workers who were suspended will keep receiving their salary. Minister Pokie explained that as long the judge has not announced a verdict, she is bound to the law. “Suspended with pay, yes. There is no verdict. The minister cannot detain people and also cannot freeze salaries independently. That is outside the scope of the rules and the law”, said minister Pokie who did not divulge any details regarding the irregularities that were detected.
