PARAMARIBO – Suriname currently faces a shortage of workers to operate the floodgates which is why the water management system...

sure. Rodney Cabenda, representative of the Association of Floodgate Operators, explained that Suriname needs at least 80 additional workers to get the job done in an adequate and safe manner. He made it clear that the current number of workers is not enough to operate all of the nation’s floodgates. There are currently about 140 Floodgate operators but dozens of additional workers are needed because of the growing tasks and challenges. “The workload is getting heavier especially during periods when there is heavy rainfall and flooding. We cannot keep the system up and running with the current number of people,” Cabenda said. One of the biggest problems is the recognition of the position of floodgate operator within the official job description system of the government. Cabenda explained that FISO does not correctly or sufficiently acknowledge this position which is why they do not earn a reasonable salary.
