PARAMARIBO - Many citizens from various parts of Paramaribo complained that they have suffered serious damage as a result of the flooding last Sunday.

Times of Suriname

Due to persistent rainfall the water could not be processed properly by the drainage system which is why many streets and houses were flooded. A resident from Winti Wai stated that his refrigerator broke when the water entered his house. A mattress that also got wet can most likely no longer be used. “Everything was flooded inside my house. We could not save anything”, said the man who clearly seemed shocked. Another resident was evidently concerned about her animals. Her yard is currently flooded which is why she fears that her chickens and ducks will die. The woman explained that this problem occurs every year and that she is puzzled by the fact that no permanent solution has been presented yet. “Why doesn’t any government succeed in addressing this problem?” She made it clear that the problem is predictable because the trenches and ditches are not dug out regularly especially not in the dry season. According to the woman, this is the main reason why the water can’t be drained whenever there is a heavy rainfall. Multiple residents who share the woman's opinion urged the government to provide regular maintenance of the drainage system.
