PARAMARIBO – While the crime rate in Suriname has dropped with 23%, there has been an alarming rise in the number of domestic violence cases.

Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath explaind that domestic violence must be tackled broadly and that the focus must also be on mental healthcare. The numbers speak for themselves. Crime is dropping on all levels but domestic violence has drastically increased. The minister pointed out that partners and their children are the ones who pay the price as they sustain serious physical and mental injuries. Referring to cases that spiralled out of control, Minister Monorath explained that investigators are trying to find out where things went wrong and how the response could be improved when victims of domestic violence press charges. “Domestic violence has risen. That means that partners attack each other. They hit each other and the children who witness it all are the ones that sustain permanent damage both physically and mentally,” said Minister Monorath. There is one big problem that makes it very difficult to handle such cases. The victims are often financially dependent on the perpetrators which is why they often drop the charges. The Ministry of Justice and Police is therefore establishing shelters for the victims of domestic violence. There are currently three foundations that provide shelter to these victims but they do not have enough room to help everybody. Minister Monorath emphasized that it would require a joint effort as the Ministry of Justice and Police can’t tackle domestic violence alone.A collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and Police and the ministries of Health and Education is necessary in order to detect the red flags and to therefore prevent the situations from escalating.
