PARAMARIBO – Doctors in Suriname recently sounded the alarm over the drastic rise in the number of fly and chikungunya cases in the past couple of weeks.

Medical experts explained that a growing number of patients with various health issues such as high fever, muscle and joint pains and serious stomach and intestinal problems are visiting local clinics. They therefore urged people to keep their surroundings clean so that mosquitoes cannot find breeding grounds. One of the doctors explained that lately he has treated multiple patients who were infected with chikungunya. Two of his patients even had to be admitted to the hospital because of serious complications. These patients had the usual symptoms of chikungunya such as a high fever and joint pains but they also vomited and had diarrhea which is why their health declined rapidly. According to the doctors, people underestimate the consequences of chikungunya. Although most patients recover at home some have to be admitted to the hospital. “Especially when patients become dehydrated as a result of vomiting and diarrhea”, said the doctor. The medical sector emphasized that prevention is the most important course of action to keep chikungunya from spreading. “Everybody has to play a role. A clean environment can make the difference between health and sickness”, said the doctors.
