Times of Suriname

There are some gas stations in Suriname that provide their customers the opportunity to fill the tanks of their vehicles on their own at night but

GOw2 Mahonylaan is currently the only one  where customers pay for gas and fill the tanks of their vehicles independently.

Rezah Amirkhan, retailer of GOw2

Mahonylaan, point d out that he has run a gas station for the past 30 years and that he deems the switch to a full self-service system as a necessary step towards modernization. “Three quarters of the world already works with this system. I had been walking around with this idea for ten years and it finally happened after the  reconstruction of the old station for the past one and a half year,” said Amirkhan who added that

GOw2 Mahonylaan has 8 tank pumps and that one of them has been designed for industrial customers with bigger tanks. “The GOw2

Mahonylaan station is not just a place to fill your tanks with fuel but it is now part of our world class retail network as it has smart

technology and advanced standards for the environment, fire safety and sustainability,” said Amirkhan. The gas station owner explained that the new system has many benefits. Customers pay at a terminal before the pump is automatically released so that they can put fuel in  their tanks. It is more efficient, safer and customer friendly. In the past gas stations were often targeted by robbers especially at night. “Due to the fact that there is no gas station attendant with cash at the pump, the risk of robberies has been reduced,” said  Amirkhan. The employees work in a safe space that is closed off. Some employees were laid off which makes it possible to give the others a raise. “I used to have 12 employees but now I have 8. I can give those 8 employees a better salary,” said the gas station owner who added that he hopes that other  GOw2 gas stations will also opt for the same transformation.

The managing director at the State Oil Company (Staatsolie),  Annand Jagesar, and  Marc Refos, asset manager marketing at GOw2, made it clear that they are very proud of the transformation that GOw2 Mahonylaan has gone through.

According to  Refos, the  full self service

technology had been available for some time to  GOw2 gas stations but it was not implemented due to various reasons.

The  asset manager of marketing at GOw2 explained that some people would need some time to get used to the new system.

Refos revealed that the  upgrade of GOw2 Mahonylaan cost $1,8 million.
