He explained that the administration of Santokhi/ Brunswijk ran the country during one of the most difficult economic periods after inheriting the debts of the previous administration that was led by the National Democratic Party (NDP). Minister Monorath pointed out that the country was in a deep crisis when the administration of Santokhi/Brunswijk came into office in 2020. “For those who forgot: it was an Avery difficult time. There was no money. It was almost curtains for Suriname,” said Minister Monorath as he spoke about Santokhi who was also a former minister of Justice and Police. Minister Monorath pointed out that Santokhi who at the time of his death was the chairman of the Progressive Reform Party (VHP) and a member of parliament had to made many urgent decisions in a very short time such as opting for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and tackling foreign debts. “The then administration operated under tremendous pressure. Hundreds of difficult decisions had to be made by the president and the vice president,” said Minister Monorath who was one of the advisors of the VP when Santokhi was president. Minister Monorath claimed that the decisions that were made eventually resulted in the recovery and stabilization of the situation. He praised his predecessor for establishing a strong network for the Ministry of Justice and Police about 20 years ago.
