PARAMARIBO - Parliament on Thursday passed the so-called E-bike Bill with 38 votes in favor of it. Members of the coalition as well as the opposition votes in favor of this bill. Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath told Times of Suriname...

that he is grateful and glad that the bill was passed. He pointed out that the Ministry of Justice and Police has been looking forward to this moment for quite some time. Minister Monorath explained that when he came into office he was even given the nickname ‘e-bike minister’. “I do not mind. The e-bike minister managed to get his E-bikes Bill passed in parliament,” said Minister Monorath with a big smile. There is another reason for him to celebrate this bill because it is the first bill that has been passed while he is in charge of the Ministry of Justice and Police. Now that the E-bikes Act has been passed, it will be legally required for moped riders to wear a helmet and to have insurance for their e-bike. Needless to say that the owners of e-bikes must also have their e-bikes inspected every year. Minister Monorath announced additional rules for e-bikes such as having a moped certificate in order for an e-bike to join traffic. Then there is also the age requirement for riding an e-bike and classifying e-bikes in 3 categories. “I am grateful for the support from parliament,” said Minister Monorath.
