PARAMARIBO - Legislators recently expressed shock and disbelief over the deaths of two illegal prospectors at the concession of Zijin Mining in the Brokopondo District.

They have demanded an independent investigation into the actions of the police especially given the fact that the statements of the witnesses contradict those in the official police report. The police claimed that the men died after they had fallen off a mountain while trying to flee from security guards. Witnesses including several prospectors claim that excessive force was used and that police officers were also involved in the deadly incident. They also accused the officers of the law of extorting them and robbing them of their gold. The contradictory statements have triggered concern in parliament. MP Raymond Sapoen (NDP) warned that forced evictions without alternatives would not provide a sustainable solution and would in fact result in a reoccurence of incidents. “MP Edgar Sampie (ABOP) also criticized the actions of the police based on the witness statements. He urged President Jennifer Simons to address the matter swiftly and to present a structural approach to it.
