PARAMARIBO – Residents from Mungra Project (Danny’s Villapark), located in the northern part of Paramaribo, recently delivered a petition to parliament, demanding an investigation to determine the...

ownership rights of the land that they live in and to protect them against evictions and their homes against demolition crews. The chairman of the parliament, Ashwin Adhin, listened to the residents in the presence of other parliamentmembers. The petition, which was read aloud by Iwan Pawirowijono, explained that the people bought real estate before making huge investments in order to build their homes. Many of the people who face eviction have lived in the Mungraproject for more than 14 years. The demolition of their homes started after a foundation showed up and claimed to be the rightful owner of the land that is located within the housingproject. The foundation also claimed that the property deeds of the residents are not valid. The residents claimed that they were never informed of the issue and that they never received any official evictions notice regarding legal procedures.
Pawirowijono made it clear that the situation has taken a serious turn because private residences have been demolished and residents have been instructed to vacate their homes and yards. The residents also claimed that people who are visibly armed with weapons started showing up in their neighbourhood. They strongly condemned the intimidation tactics which make them feel unsafe and strike fear into their hearts. “We deem it unacceptable that families who have lived peacefully for years to be confronted with evictions and the demolition of their homes”, said Pawirowijono. The residents from the Mungraproject want parliament to put a freeze in the evictions and to launch an independent investigation until the legal status of the housing project has been made clear.
