PARAMARIBO – The government wants to actively start getting the homeless people off the streets and into a shelter. Health, Welfare and Labor Minister Andre Misiekaba....

announced that the government will focus on people with mental health problems but that it will also focus on people who ended up on the streets due to circumstances. The government will collaborate with the Psychiatric Center Suriname (PCS) to identify the homeless people with mental health problems and to get them off the streets. Meanwhile a shelter for the homeless people is being established at Domburg. The shelter at Domburg will not take in people with mental health problems. Minister Misiekaba made it clear that the problem is more complicated that people imagine. “Everybody talks about the facilities but nobody talks about the costs,” said the minister who added that running a shelter requires a lot of money and therefore financial obligations which is why it must become clear first how the costs will be covered. Minister Misiekaba confirmed that the ministry still has not talked to Louis Vismale who is a strong advocate for a shelter for the homeless. He explained that the homeless people with mental health problems will be placed at the PCS so that they can receive the necessary treatment and counselling. People who became homeless because of family problems, financial difficulties or other circumstances will be taken to the shelter at Domburg where they will receive training to develop a skill so that they can earn a living. The government hopes that most of these homeless people will eventually be able to return to their ‘homes.’ There are currently no reliable figures to indicate how many people live in the streets of Suriname. According to Minister Misiekaba, neither the PCS nor social organizations have a complete list with the names of the homeless people. “When we get the people off the streets, we will start writing down their information. We must get a clear picture as to who will go to the PCS, who will go to Domburg and who will go elsewhere,” said Minister Misiekaba.
