CORONIE – MP Le-Roy Doorson (NDP) recently urged the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO) to repair the dam in the Coronie...

District as soon as possible. He explained that the situation could get out of hand as many fields of the local farmers are currently flooded. The legislator pointed out that the farmers that raise cattle have been hit the hardest as there is no more dry land left for their cows. “Almost all of the farmers in Coronie are flooded. There is water everywhere and the people do not know what to do,” said MP Doorson who added that the farmers are trying to bring their cows to safety on small patches of dry land that are still available. But the situation is only getting worse each day. “The cows are piling up on the small patches of dry land. But if the rain does not stop, I fear that the situation will only get worse,” said the MP
Doorson who added that he fears that the problems will eventually spread to the Oost-Westverbinding. “If this goes on, I fear that the Oost-Westverbinding will break. Some people already have to use a boat to reach their backyard. The consequences could be enormous if the government does not take swift action. People could lose their cattle. That would mean huge financial losses to families who need these animals to make a living.” MP Doorson explained that the Ministry of Agriculture, Stock Breeding and Fisheries is already doing its part but that the Public Works Ministry must also accept its responsibility by fixing the dam.
