PARAMARIBO – Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath recently announced that the allegations regarding...

corruption within the Anti Corruption Committee (ACC) are currently being investigated and that the police inspector who is allegedly involved in a corruption scandal has been relieved of his duties on the ACC. He made this announcement in response to the revelations made by MP Ebu Jones (NDP). MP Jones claimed that a local entrepreneur who is under investigation had been asked for a bribe of $ 7,000. He also claimed that the police officer in charge of the investigation is a member of the ACC. Minister Monorath explained to parliament that this case is being investigated by the Corruption Investigation Team that has to report straight to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Court of Justice which means that it does not report back to the Police Force Suriname (KPS). He also explained that there might be some confusion because the Corruption Investigation Team and the Judicial Intervention Team (JIT) are based in the same building and that in the past both departments investigated the same cases simultaneously. The revelation made by MP Jones have raised serious questions regarding the integrity of the departments in charge of investigating corruption cases.
